The need
THE PROBLEM
Pakistan is currently in position of having one of the worst water situations in Southeast Asia. Out of the 165 million people living in the country, 50 million do not have access to clean water, while 74 million do not have sanitation (Running on Empty) More than half the population is without the means for clean water. According to Running On Empty, by 2025, Pakistan will be in a water deficit of 100 billion cubic meters. There is also the issue of urban water systems, whereas in areas like Karachi, around 40% of water is lost by leakage and theft.
WHO?
The Affected:
The people of Pakistan are heavily affected by this water pollution. Soon, the entire population will be faced with this problem. Out of all the water in Pakistan, 97% goes into agriculture while the rest is set aside for the people to use (Running on Empty).
WHY?
The reason this problem exists is due to both the government and the people. The government has shown that they are indifferent to the cause to provide clean water for their citizens. They have few laws set on water rights, subsidies, and prices. However, the government is not the only ones responsible for the situation. The people need to understand the dangers of unsafe drinking water. There is a low amount of public awareness on the issue regarding sanitation. There are still people that defecate in the same waters they drink from. With a combined effort by the government, the people, and organizations like COH20, countries like Pakistan can look to the future and be on the rise to a better tomorrow.
