My name is Umar Farooq. I am currently a junior at Annandale High School located in Annandale, Virginia. Both of my parents were born and raised in the city of Jhelum in Pakistan (located right off the Jhelum River). They decided to move to the United States in the early 90's for better economic opportunities. I have been to Pakistan three times in my life, but, it was the most recent trip that really inspired me to create my clean water venture.
My grandmother's house in Pakistan is the only one in her neighborhood with an actual well for water. So, when the electricity goes out, which it does multiple times a day, families in the neighborhood come to her house for water. However, even her well water is not clean. My dad said that there is a high chance the water has Hepatitis A. Three years later, I was invited to join LearnServe International and decided to pursue a solution to provide clean drinking water to communities in need.
